Comminuted fracture picture



A fracture in which bone is broken, splintered or crushed into a number of pieces. A
fracture is considered comminuted when there are at least 3 bone fragments.

Comminuted
fractures are also sometimes known as multi-fragmentary fractures.


A comminuted fracture is most common in elderly
people or in people with conditions which weaken the bones, such as
osteoporosis or cancer


You can see in the picture a Comminuted fracture.
On the left you see where the bone and broken into two parts and
breaking apart leaving bone fragments. In the picture two the right you
see a less severe fracture.


Symptoms of a comminuted fracture



  • Tremendous pain at the site of the fracture

  • The area around the break will also swell, and it may become warm to the
    touch.

  • Typically the patient cannot bear any weight on the fracture without
    experiencing significant pain.


Complications of comminuted fractures



  • Infection

  • Compartment syndrome

  • Vascular necrosis, and nonunion, in which the pieces of bone fail to
    join together.
