There are three bones in the thumb. Unlike fingers that where the
phalanges make up their bones, the thumb bones include the metacarpal as
well as the two phalanges of the thumb. You can see these marked on the
right side of the picture of the thumb. A broken thumb is a crack or brake
on any of the three bones or the joints that connect them.
