Chancroid Picture
Chancroid is a sexually transmitted disease characterized by painful ulcers and
painful regional lymphadenopathy. While the disease is uncommon in industrialized nations,
it is a frequent cause of genital ulcer disease in developing countries. In some areas of
the US, chancroid is endemic, and it is known to occur in discrete outbreaks. Chancroid is
caused by the small gram-negative rod, Haemophilus ducreyi. The organism is transmitted by
direct contact through the skin, presumably through minor abrasions
